In a significant shift, U.S. stocks, which initially exhibited gains, took a downturn on Tuesday afternoon, following a dramatic change in sentiment towards global tariff negotiations. This came after President Trump affirmed the implementation of a 104% tariff on China, set to take effect tomorrow. The S&P 500 saw a decline exceeding 1.2%, the Dow dropped by approximately 200 points, and the Nasdaq decreased by about 1.5%, reflecting the market's reaction to the administration's firm stance. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt described these tariffs as "non-negotiable," highlighting concerns surrounding national security. In a retaliatory response, China pledged to "fight to the end." Despite indications that upwards of 70 countries, including Japan and South Korea, expressed willingness to negotiate, the lack of substantial progress highlighted ongoing geopolitical tensions and heightened fears of a potential trade war escalation that could lead to a recession. Additionally, the looming threat of Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on U.S. automotive products added to investor apprehensions.
