This uptick was largely driven by gains in the technology sector and among financial institutions, following President Trump's announcement to exempt certain tech products—including smartphones, laptops, and other electronics—from the 145% China-specific tariffs and the 10% baseline tariffs. This decision eased apprehensions of a significant economic downturn, which had been a concern due to escalating trade restrictions between the world's two largest economies. Although President Trump mentioned that additional sector-specific tariffs, such as those on imported semiconductors, are on the horizon, the market was bolstered by the strong performances of tech giants. Shopify and Celestica both saw increases of approximately 3%, and Constellation Software gained nearly 2%. Meanwhile, major financial institutions maintained their positive trajectory.
